REEDTECH

Dr. Daniel Pande, Dr. Jannet Nyukuri and Mr. Obwanga Benson attended a BREEDTECH project staff-training programme in Plant Breeding and Plant Biotechnology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU Campus) in Arlnap Sweden from 23-26th June 2026. 

This is part of the BREEDTECH project deliverable on capacity building of staff and students drawn from partner institutions that include Egerton University and Laikipia University (Kenya), Haramaya University and Oda Baltum University (Ethiopia) and An-Najah National University and Al-Quds Open University (Palestine). BREEDTECH project is funded by EU Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union (EU) and is aimed at building Capacity in Plant Breeding and Biotechnology Education and Research through partnership program in Africa, Middle East and Europe. The project has been running since March 2024 and is expected to conclude in November 2027.  

The team from Laikipia University benefitted from the training offered by experts including both professors and researchers (from Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences - SLU-Sweden; Scuola Superiore St Anna- Pisa (Italy), and Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (Serbia). The participants also got an opportunity to participate in a side field event dubbed Borgeby Fältdagar (www.borgebyfaltdagar.se) where exhibitors were drawn from all over Europe showcasing modern technology in agricultural production including machinery, plant and animal breeding technology, AI in agriculture production, climate smart agriculture among other technologies. 

The training and field visits offered the team from Laikipia University great and unique platform to network for future collaborations in research, training and dissemination.  Apart from training of faculty members and students, the BREEDTECH project has also supported curriculum development, knowledge dissemination and incubation platforms as well as networking opportunities among key stakeholders in the plant breeding, crop protection, and biotechnology ecosystem.
