Laikipia University student Denis Ochieng’ is one of the top 100 delegates aged between 18 and 25 hailing from 45 countries to attend the fourth edition of the Youth Agricultural s-Summit in Brasilia, Brazil, November 2019.The delegates share a commitment to driving progress towards a world without hunger.

This is a program sponsored by BAYER CROP SCIENCE, one of the world’s leading research-intensive companies in the Agricultural industry and its capital is in Germany. The summit is part of Bayer’s education program that seeks to find solution for the increased food insecurity in the world. Therefore the program brings young leaders from across the globe after every two years (since 2013 in Canada, 2015 in Australia and 2017 in Belgium) to discuss this issue and possibly give their sentiments on sustainable development goals .Bayer therefore believes that to meet this challenge, youth must be inspired and educated to advance innovative and sustainable agricultural practices that will ensure food security.

Denis is a BSc. Agricultural Economics, 3rd year student at Laikipia University. He is a member of ESALU (Economics students Association of Laikipia University) and ENACTUS (Entrepreneurial action for us). Denis is grateful to Dr. Florence Opondo and Dr. John King’au   who have been his mentors and who introduced him to Agripreneurship Alliance training (Switzerland based organization) program. He still recalls the inspiring words by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kibett Rotich, “this is the beginning of greatness” during the training which ignited a spark in him to go for greatness.

Another feather in his cap is that Denis is a member of Young African Leadership Initiative (YALI RLC EA) Cohort 28, an initiative started by former US President, Barrack Obama in 2014 to nurture next generation of African leaders and was picked from more than 6000 applications, Denis was lucky enough to be among the 104 beneficiaries selected from 14 countries in East and Central Africa.

Denis is very excited to be among the 100 delegates heading to Brazil in November for the three-day summit and among the 10 in Africa.” Being selected among 2800 applications from 140 countries is actually a big win for not only me but Africa, my country Kenya, My University; Laikipia University, my friends and family and above all, my mother who has always believed in me and has always been supportive. Let’s keep pressing on, you never know what the future holds. Let’s wake up from our comfort zones and chase our dreams. Everything is possible. And above all, let’s put God in everything we do.”

Denis Oduor Ochieng is very passionate about youth leadership, mentorship and volunteering in the quest to make Africa a better place. Denis believes that to achieve the sustainable development goals, Agenda 2063 for Africa as well as vision 2030, Youth must be in the forefront.
